Researchers have a better understanding of schizophrenia, thanks to three large studies on genes linked to the disease.

Experts across the globe studied the genes of more than 50,000 people, some had schizophrenia. Others did not have the disease.

They were able to identify thousands of gene malfunctions, which researchers believe account for one-third of cases.

However, they found schizophrenia doesn't have just one genetic cause it's a mixture of several genetic factors.

The increased risk among gene carriers was small, about 15 to 25% higher than the general population.

Experts say more research is needed, but that this study gives them a better idea how the disease works.

The study is published in the journal Nature.
