KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Who doesn’t love ice cream, especially in a hot summer? Pour on the toppings, and you have it made!
But along with the hot fudge, sprinkles and cherry, you may also be getting a serving of bacteria. Too much bacteria in your sweet treat can make your stomach churn.
An NBC Action News hidden camera investigation uncovered how some of your favorite restaurants are serving up plenty of bacteria in the soft serve ice cream.
Ice cream, with ingredients like milk, eggs and cream, can be heavenly for anyone with a sweet tooth. But too much bacteria in the sweet treat can leave you flat on your back.
Just ask Sharon, an Overland Park wife and mother.
“My goodness, I never would have thought that having a tasty treat in the summer time could cause something like this,” Sharon said.
In June, Sharon, her husband and adult daughter all got sick at the same time.
Sharon said they all three only ate one thing in common 12 hours before getting sick. That was soft serve ice cream at an Overland Park McDonald's.
“Exactly 12 hours later all three of us became violently ill. My daughter became so sick she ended up in the emergency room,” Sharon added.
The McDonald’s manager told the NBC Action News Investigators said they found no problems with the ice cream machine and received only one complaint from Sharon and her family.
“We have a clean and impeccable store,” the manager told Investigator Keith King. “We take great pride in what we do. Nothing has really changed. There was no finding on our end.”
