SACRAMENTO, Ca. - A new study now reveals more about mercury and autism, but unfortunately doesn't give any new clues about what causes the devastating condition.

Researchers at UC Davis M.I.N.D. Institute say children with autism have virtually the same levels of mercury as children who develop normally. Children with autism do not metabolize mercury differently either.

The study seems to eliminate mercury as a cause of autism, but does not come any closer to figuring out how to unlock the mystery.

Irva Hertz-Picciotto, Ph. D., UC Davis M.I.N.D. Institute says, "We need to cast a very wide net and really look broadly at all sorts of things that are in the environment.”

Some researchers and parents have suspected that mercury, used in childhood vaccinations could cause children to be autistic.

This study say kids who had vaccines that contain mercury were no more likely than other kids to have elevated levels of the chemical.
