KANSAS CITY, Mo. - A Kansas City hospital is taking extra nutritional steps to help low birth-weight and high-risk infants.
When a new mom is unable to produce adequate milk for an at-risk infant, St. Luke's Hospital is now offering "donated" human milk instead of formula.
The milk comes from a national donor bank and is pasteurized and treated prior to shipping.
St. Luke doctors say the human milk is the best choice for the development of premature and high risk babies or those with chronic health problems.
"We've had upwards of 90-95% of our parents of the eligible babies who have agreed to use the donor milk and fully embraced it,” says Dr. Barbara Carr, St. Luke’s Hospital.
So far, St. Luke's is the only hospital in Kansas City to offer the human donor milk service.
