WASHINGTON, DC - Drug makers have to follow strict rules when advertising on TV, radio, newspapers and magazines.
But online, there are no real rules or even guarantees of truth. The FDA wants to change that.
Hearings began Thursday in Washington for tougher regulations for medical claims on websites, blogs and social media.
Diana Zuckerman with the National Research Center for Women and Families says, "You have bloggers saying, 'I love this medication' or 'I love these wrinkle fillers' when, in fact, they've been bought and paid for by the company that makes the product.”
Thursday's hearing comes seven months after the FDA sent out warning letters to more than a dozen manufacturers accusing them of making inaccurate claims on the internet.
