5 Foods for a New You in the New Year

KANSAS CITY, Mo – If you’re like a lot of Americans, eating better is probably on your list of new years resolutions.

Well, here are five food items nutritionists say you can add to your diet that can improve your health and help you ward off certain diseases in 2010.

Think Green

Green tea is chock-full of antioxidants, and studies show it can help lower belly fat because of its effect on your metabolism. Drink about three cups of the green stuff a day in order to see the benefit.

Go With the Grain

Grains, like oats, barley, and rye, can lower your cholesterol, experts say. Rye can help with diabetes by evening out blood glucose levels.

The Joy of Soy

Doctors have found soy has myriad benefits. Studies have found that when introduced into the diet earlier in life, it can be effective in warding off breast cancer.

Keep It in the Red

Experts say red drinking red wine can also be helpful in fighting some cancers, as well as fighting heart disease and diabetes. Women should drink five ounces a day; Men, ten ounces.

Doctors say purple grapes are loaded with phytochemicals and compounds which help induce blood flow, giving red wine ten times more nutritional punch than white.

Go Fish

Don’t forget the salmon, doctors say. It cuts inflammation in the body that can lead to heart problems. The fish is also a good source of vitamin D, and Omega 3 fatty acids that keep the brain and heart healthy.
