Bob Russell of Raytown, MO wants to know where his Thanksgiving turkey was raised.
Good Question.
Bob, if you purchased your bird at a grocery story, it more than likely came from one of the top turkey producing US states, or Canada. The Census burea reports the states that produce the most turkeys are Minnesota, North Carolina, Arkansas, Virginia, Missouri and Indiana. Those six states account for about two-thirds of U.S. turkey production in 2008. The U.S. also imported $9.2 million worth of live turkeys, 99.3 percent coming from Canada.
Here's a look at some favotire Thanksgiving sides:
The Census Bureau notes that the top producing states for cranberries are Wisconsin, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Oregon and Washington.
Top producing sweet potato states are North Carolina, California, Missouri and Louisiana.
As for pumpkins, the top states for production are Ilinois, Ohio, California, and New York.
