Workforce Partnership: Youth Initiative

Reported by: Jeff Vaughn
Last Update: 9/21/2009 8:36 am
NBC Action News is helping Workforce Partnership and the Full Employment Council get the word out about careers for young job seekers.  The deadline to spend the Federal Stimulus money is December 31st, 2009, so there is still time to get involved.

Workforce Partnership of Kansas is making 800 internships available this year, and the Full Employment Council of Missouri is offering 1,000 positions. Both are offering the jobs to youth ages 16-24 years of age.

The programs offer eight week paid internships in mostly government and community college settings. Upon completion, participants receive a work readiness credential

"Youth employment takes a disproportionate hit during economic downturns because adults looking for work take jobs traditionally held by youth", says Scott Anglemyer of Workforce Partnership.

Anglemyer says there is evidence that this is happening in the current recession. "Our summer youth internship provides long term career planning and experience for the next level", says Anglemyer. "Recently passed economic stimulus legislation has created new opportunities for summer youth employment as well."

While this internship program is targeted to lower income youth, Workforce Partnership can assist any youth looking for a job regardless of age, residency, or income. Anglemyer says. "Each center maintains a list of youth-friendly employers, and we work with a number of employers who are looking for part-time help suitable for youth."
For Workforce Partnership’s program, you must be a resident of Johnson, Leavenworth, or Wyandotte counties. These internships are targeted for low-income individuals and income eligibility guidelines must be met. Click here to learn more.

Interested youth can make an appointment at one of the Kansas Workforce Partnership centers in Leavenworth, Wyandotte or Johnson county by calling 877-629-5681.

Applicants can obtain an employment form and a checklist of required documentation by visiting one of our workforce centers. Applicants must bring all necessary documentation and completed paperwork with them to their appointment.

The Full Employment Council offers a similar program on the Missouri side. Click here to learn more
