YONKERS, NY – Consumer Reports says the internet offers three of eight important ways Americans can save at their favorite restaurants.

The magazine’s July issue points to web coupons, online surveys, and e-mail alerts as three of the best ways cut your check for dinner.

For example, Consumer Reports found free breakfasts, free desserts, dollars off coupons, 20 percent discount coupons, free shrimp cocktails, even free chocolate fondue for two. Scroll down for links to local restaurants featured in the Eight Ways to Save article.

Here's a look at all the tips offered in the July issue of the magazine.

Eight Ways to Save

1) Look for bargains - The magazine found Chili's Grill & Bar had 10 meals for less than $7, and Outback had 15 meals for less than $15.

2) Clip Coupons - Especially in newspaper inserts and on Web sites.

3) Sign-up for e-mail alerts and savings clubs - You can get coupons for free dessert (Bugaboo Creek Steak House and Black Angus), a $5 discount (Logan's Roadhouse), a 20 percent discount (Denny's) and free chocolate fondue for two (The Melting Pot).

4) Show your age - Don't be afraid to use senior or children's discounts

5) Take an online survey - According to Consumer Reports, you can get free stuff for sharing your experience (You usually have to be signed up for e-mail alerts). But be careful you're not a victim of spam. Crooks could get your information and the restaurant likely won't honor the fake freebie

6) Time your visit - Many restaurants have happy hour specials - Times vary.

7) Sit at the bar - Consumer Reports says McCormick & Schmick's has a bar menu offering cheeseburgers and fries for less than $3, tuna rolls for less than $4, and jambalaya for less than $5. You can also join T.G.I. Friday's free Give Me More Stripes frequent-diner program and get bar appetizers for a penny.

8) Order takeout - At least you'll save on tip and drinks
