SHAWNEE MISSION, Kan. – In a cost reduction effort, the Johnson County Library will eliminate paper notices by year’s end. Paper notices for overdue library materials, holds, and bills will no longer be mailed to library patrons.
As an alternative, the library offers both e-mail and phone notification which are popular with many library users. It’s estimated that elimination of the mailed notifications will save the library more than $72,000 annually.
County Librarian Donna Lauffer says, "Eliminating all paper notices can make a huge cost saving impact. Currently, there are over 30,000 library card holders signed up to receive paper notifications through the mail who will need to switch to e-mail or telephone."
Lauffer says the library strongly encourages the use of e-mail notifications because of it’s promptness and increased detail when compared to telephone notification.
To change the form of notification, library users may visit any Johnson County Library or call (913) 495-7521. The Olathe Public Library, which shares a database with the Johnson County Library, will also discontinue paper notification by mail at the end of this year.
