KANSAS CITY, Mo.- On any given night, more than four thousand people in Kansas City, Missouri find themselves without a place to live. Hoping to change that, the city got a multi-million dollar grant. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Deputy Secretary Ron Sims presented Kansas City Mayor Mark Funkhouser a $3.6 million check Friday morning to prevent homelessness and help those that already are.
Sims and Funkhouser joined the members of the Homeless Services Coalition of Greater Kansas City to announce the Homeless Prevention and Rapid Re-Housing grant.
Barbara Nelson and her two children were homeless up until a few years ago. She says the help she received from homeless services in Kansas City was exactly what she needed.
"I had someone to talk to. I got a full-time job and a place to live. I learned how to budget," Nelson said. "It changed my life a lot."
The money comes from the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act.
Officials said Friday morning that they haven't yet decided how the money will be distributed.
