Is the No-Call List Getting Ignored?

Last Update: 4/25/2009 11:07 am
Reported By: John Matarese
You may have received an annoying call from a computerized voice selling car warranties.

The callers seemingly don’t care if you’re on the Do-Not-Call list and don’t care if your phone is a cell phone.

Tim Henderson says he recently received an unexpected call on his cell phone and heard a message saying “You are still eligible to reactivate warranty coverage. This is the final call before we close the file.”

Tim says he got the same call several times in the same week and his friends got multiple calls too.

The call urged him to renew his car’s warranty. The thing is - he drives a 1964 Dodge Dart with a warranty that expired 40 years ago!
It doesn’t matter because your number is chosen at random.
According to the Better Business Bureau, whether you drive at 1964 Dodge Dart or no car at all – it doesn’t matter because your number is chosen at random.

So the calls will come even if you are on the Do-Not-Call list and even if you select the option to be removed from their calling list.

The Bureau has logged more than 20,000 complaints about these computerized calls.
So what can you do to stop them?

-  The BBB says don't talk to them, and don’t sign up for their no call list because they don’t honor no call lists.

-  Instead, try to get their number and report them to the BBB, state attorney general, and the FTC.

-  If the calls keep coming, screen your incoming calls and don’t pick up from unknown area codes.

-  And the BBB says don't buy the warranty because as Tim learned, they really have no idea what you are driving.

The attorney general of North Carolina recently got a court injunction to stop one of these companies from calling consumers but others continue to call.

If thousands of people file a complaint and report these callers, there's a good chance the law will eventually make them stop.
