MIAMI- Brian Waters paced the field on Super Bowl Sunday. The Chiefs guard probably wishes he could suit up and live out a dream. However, he received a heckuva consolation prize when the NFL presented him with the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award. He issued this statement through the Chiefs.
“I am so appreciative of my wife, family, the National Football League, the Kansas City Chiefs and my teammates for their support. Most of all I am thankful to the many organizations and families that partner with the 54 Foundation. Their generosity and kindness have been a blessing to us. It is an honor to be considered for, and to win this illustrious award! I hope that I can be an encouragement to others to get involved and impact their own communities.”
This is the second time Waters has been a finalist for the award. He edged out Washington linebacker London Fletcher and Cleveland receiver Mike Furrey for the honor. Waters is the fifth Chief to win the award. He joins Willie Lanier, Len Dawson, Derrick Thomas and Will Shields as Man of the Year recipients.
Waters has been quiet this season. For the most part, he has refused to talk to the media after reportedly having a contentious first meeting with head coach Todd Haley.
Still, Waters has quietly continued his public service. His foundation has helped dozens of children land college scholarships. He is involved in several community service programs in both Kansas City and his native Texas.
