Story Reported Oct. 26, 2009
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Chiefs running back Larry Johnson’s tweets Sunday night are causing quite the stir in the Twitter community.
But it’s Johnson’s alleged use of what some would call a homophobic term in a response to a fan’s message that might have him in even more heat Monday.
As NBC Action Sports Director reported Sunday night, Johnson wrote after the Chiefs’ 37-7 loss to San Diego “My father played for the coach from “remember the titans” coach played golf. my father played for redskins briefly. our coach. nuthn.”
Before that he wrote “My father got more credentials than most of these pro coaches….google my father”.
Media reports of his tweets, and the undeniable ability of tweets circulating quickly, prompted a mass response from fans all around the country.
Some ‘@’ messages, which users can easily track and are a sort of public message to a specific individual (in this case messages sent to LJ’s Twitter account @toonicon – which was made private sometime Sunday night or Monday morning) were in defense of the one-time Pro Bowler, but many wasted no time in blasting the back, who has seen his fair share of headlines off the field.
One Twitter user wrote at 11 p.m. Sunday “YES!!!!! LARRY JOHNSON CALLED ME A [expletive removed] ON TWITTER.”
That user had previously posted, presumably in response to LJ’s original tweets about Chiefs Coach Todd Haley and Larry’s father, “Interesting comments by Larry Johnson ( @toonlcon ) about "coaches." Hey LJ, is it Haley's fault you fall when D-Linemen blow on you?” and “Apologies. His Twitter alias is @toonicon whatever the hell that means. Probably something about spitting in women's faces.”
