KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Cincinnati Bengals have agreed to a 1-year contract with former Chief running back Larry Johnson,
ESPN's John Clayton is reporting.
The Bengals and several other teams expressed interest in Johnson after his release last week from the Chiefs.
Cincinnati coach Marv Lewis said Monday, if signed, Johnson would likely be a fourth-string running back on the team and probably wouldn't even be initially activated if he is picked up
Ron Jaworski, an NFL analyst for EPSN, talked Monday night on ESPN about whether signing Johnson, released last week from the Chiefs, would be a risky move.
"I don't think it's a risky move at all," Jaworski said. "I think it's a brilliant move."
Johnson was suspended by the
Chiefs after posting a gay slur and questions about head coach Todd Haley’s competence on his Twitter account. The team released Johnson last Monday.
Johnson is expected to be paid the prorated league minimum.
The Bengals hold a one-game lead in the AFC North, with a division record of 5-0 and 7-2 overall.
The
Bengals are tweeting about the possible deal as well.
