Kansas City Prevails in Overtime

OVERTIME

The Steelers won the toss and elected to receive, and looked to be on the game winning drive when quarterback Ben Roethelsberger was knocked out of the game during a rushing attempt, killing the drive and forcing a punt.

Once they got the ball, and after a near interception, Cassel hit Chambers on a crossing route, and Chambers ran 61-yards down to the Steelers four yard-line, leading to a 21-yard game-winning field goal by Ryan Succop.

FINAL: Chiefs 27, Pittsburgh 24.

4th Quarter

The first key play of the final quarter came when Cassel turned the ball over on a fumble deep in Chiefs territory, and it only took Pittsburgh a few plays to retake the lead, 24-17, with a touchdown pass to Rashard Mendenhall.

But the Chiefs wouldn’t go away. Cassel connected on consecutive monster pass plays to Lance Long and Chris Chambers to put the Chiefs inside the Steeler’s 20 yard-line. The plays led to a touchdown pass from Cassel to Charles to tie the game back up.

Neither team would put any points on the board the rest of the quarter, forcing overtime.

SCORE: Chiefs 24, Pittsburgh 24

3rd Quarter

Though the Steelers took the opening kick-off of the second half, Chiefs Linebacker Andy Studebaker intercepted a pass, giving the Chiefs early 3rd quarter momentum.

And the Chiefs converted on that momentum when quarterback Matt Cassel hit Leonard Pope with a 22-yard touchdown pass to leave the Chiefs down by just three points.

Studebaker wasn’t done with his anti-Steelers antics, intercepting a second pass in the Chiefs end zone and returning it for 94-yards deep into Pittsburgh territory, leading to a 27-yard field goal from Ryan Succop to tie the game at 17.

SCORE: Chiefs 17, Pittsburgh 17

2nd Quarter

The Steelers couldn’t convert a touchdown after driving for more than seven-minutes, but did add a 36-yard field goal early in the quarter to cut the lead down to four.

Pittsburgh wouldn’t rest, driving down the field on its next possession, ending in a 8-yard touchdown pass to Hines Ward to take their first lead of the day, 10-7.

The Steelers continued their dominance of the 2nd quarter, scoring for the third time when the Pittsburgh quarterback hit tight-end Heath Miller for an 11-yard touchdown pass to extend their lead to 17-7.

SCORE: Pittsburgh 17, Chiefs 7

1st Quarter

The Chiefs started out with a bang, as return man Jamaal Charles took the opening kick-off 97 yards for a touchdown to snag an early 7-0 lead. The return was the first kickoff return by Kansas City since Dante Hall did it in 2004.

Cornerback Brandon Flowers maintained the Chiefs momentum in recovering a Pittsburgh fumble, but the Chiefs weren’t able to advance the ball any further.

The Steelers converted a fourth and one play in Chiefs territory, but weren’t able to score before the end of the quarter.

SCORE: Chiefs 7, Pittsburgh 0
