KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Chiefs needed a defensive tackle after they traded Tank Tyler to the Carolina Panthers.

They decided on Wednesday to sign free agent defensive tackle Kenny Smith to the 53-man roster. The team also added former LSU defensive tackle Marlon Favorite to the practice squad.

Smith attended training camp with New England in 2007-08. He played for New Orleans from 2001-04. But he hasn’t played in an NFL game since 2003 because of injuries.

Smith said he’s been working out in Florida and feels good health wise. Chiefs head coach Todd Haley liked the way Smith moved around during Wednesday’s practice. Haley admitted Smith could be active for this Sunday’s game because the Chiefs have a lack of depth at nose tackle.

Smith was a four-year starter and two-time All-SEC selection at Alabama.
