KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The new iPhone doesn't have all the glitches of the earlier model, but replacing one part could be as much as a brand new phone.
The new
iPhone 3GS model is advertised as the fastest yet, but if you pick it up too fast, and don't have a good grip on it, you could pay a hefty price.
Soon after getting the new iPhone for his entire family, Dave Gregory's teenage daughters dropped the phone. Gregory says they simply dropped the phone as they fumbled to pick up a call.
The glass screens shattered. Gregory discovered that's the one thing not covered by
Apple's warranty.
The repair cost is $199 for one screen.
"So I paid the equivalent of what the phone cost, in the first 30 days, twice," Gregory said.
Hundreds of users have complained about this online, and several sites now offer a $5 solution. There are even
eBay postings offering tools and materials for $15-30 to fix your screen.
The problem is that comes with a cost, too. Your warranty is void if you open the phone.
A protective cover might be the best investment no matter what phone you buy.
While it's easy to drop a phone, cosmetic damage is not always covered, and sometimes that damage can break the bank.
