KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- As census workers head into neighborhoods to get the latest data, scams are popping up.
The requests for information will come through a phone call, a knock at the door, or a letter.
The requests are not supposed to come through email. However, I even got an email from a census worker the other day and it was not from a government email address.
If a neighbor gives out your email to a census worker to verify information, do not give out any information until you get proof that is truly a census worker. Require a government (.gov) email or a face-to-face meeting.
Before you give out any information ask for identification. Census workers carry bags bearing a logo, their cars have a placard, and the workers should wear photo ID and a badge.
Also, never give out bank information or your social security number.
