TOPEKA, Kan. – VONAGE customers will soon find it easier to cancel their service.
As part of a settlement reached with Kansas and 31 other states, the internet based phone service will change the way it handles consumer cancellation requests.
According to Attorney General Steve Six, the state will receive $45,000 as part of the $3 million settlement.
“I am pleased Vonage will provide restitution to consumers and improve the level of service provided to Kansas consumers,” Six said. “My office will continue to work with other states to protect consumers.”
VONAGE is accused of giving customers a difficult time in trying to cancel their service. Court documents say VONAGE paid incentives to customer service representatives to keep customers from cancelling. As a result, customers found it tough or sometimes impossible to do it.
The settlement puts in place a broad restitution plan requiring VONAGE to make refunds to eligible consumers who filed complaints regarding unauthorized charges from January 2004 to March 16, 2010, which have not been resolved.
Six says the money will be used for consumer restitution, continued enforcement of the Kansas Consumer Protection Act and consumer education efforts.
