How to Rescue a Drowned Cellphone

Last Update: 7/16 10:35 am
Summer fun can send your favorite electronics into a frenzy.

"When sometimes I'm out by the pool and people splash and water gets into the keyboard and I guess that gets into the back of the phone," admits cell phone user Lauren Graham.

What to do?

The Geek Squad has advice.

"Because of the heat and humidity and the sand a lot of cell phones just fail," says Geek Squad employee Bilal Rizvi.

Rizvi says moisture is the biggest problem for summer cell phone users.

"If you spill something on it or if your phone drops in the pool or if you jump in the pool with your phone in your pants," he says.

You want to dry it out quickly.

Before you have to buy a new one, Bilal says there's a step by step process you should try.

"First, take out the battery from your phone. That will make sure you don't get a short. Second thing you want to do is take a clean cloth or paper towel and dry the outside of the phone. Once that is done you want to tilt the phone on each side and see if there is any liquid inside," says Rizvi.

Then silicone gel packs and a plastic bag can be a cell phone lifesaver.

Uncooked rice and a plastic container will do the trick as well.

Want your cell phone to last longer?

Never leave it in the car.

"It can go up to like 140 degrees," says Rizvi.

The heat can fry circuits, cause LCD screens to fail, and wear out your lithium batteries.

So take all the electronics with you.

"I would probably recommend you take your GPS with you," Rizvi advises.

Glare protectors are also a good idea.

The Geek Squad says they are a cheap way to protect from pool-side scratches and they can save your screen from the sun's harmful rays.
