WASHINGTON, D.C. -- A new study released by the
National Consumer Law Center (NCLC) calls for more accountability in required foreclosure mediations. These take place in some states before foreclosure sales can take place.
The NCLC says these mediations can help consumers greatly, but they're not working just like the modification programs. The nonprofit group analyzed 25 programs in 14 states, of which Missouri and Kansas are not included.
"Under most of the existing foreclosure mediation programs, servicers have all the discretion and homeowners have little or no power. If the programs continue to demand little or no accountability from servicers, they will likely go the way of federal efforts to control foreclosures that have failed as a reusult of relying on voluntary compliancy by the lending industry," NCLC staff attorney Geoffrey Walsh said.
