WASHINGTON -- President Obama is expected to sign into law any day a bill that would give consumers money for their clunker.
There are many questions about how this program will work, and now it's getting another name. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is calling it the "Car Allowance Rebate System" and
setup a Web site for this. NHTSA says it's creating rules to implement this program in 30 days or July 2009.
The program will give clunker drivers up to a
$4500 voucher for a new car if it meets the requirements for fuel economy in a new car.
Edmunds.com put together a list of cars that may qualify for this program. However, there are questions from consumers over whether or not the
fuel standards are accurate.
You don't need a voucher for the program. You just go to a participating dealer when the program starts and the dealer will apply for a credit in your name.
