KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Multiple fire and emergency crews battled a house fire in the 1300 block of Ewing Tuesday morning.
The fire was reported around 4:35 a.m.
NBC Action News Reporter Sloane Heller arrived to the scene around 5 a.m. to find massive flames and smoke pouring from a vacant house.
There were about a dozen fire trucks fighting the blaze.
The Chief said firefighters were initially battling the blaze from inside the house, but then the floors started to give way. Crews say a bathtub fell through the second floor onto the first, narrowly missing two firefighters. Fortunately, no one was hurt.
Because of the dangers of fighting the fire from the inside, the Chief shifted his crew outside to fight the blaze from the roof. By about 5:30 a.m., the fire was under control.
Throughout the morning, crews also focused on keeping the next-door neighbors safe. They kept an eye on blowing embers, immediately putting them out.
A neighbor told NBC Action News that the home has been vacant for two to three months.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
