LENEXA, Kan. - There are many factors that go into keeping a company's computer system running 24/7. Many companies turn to off-sight date storage centers. Deep in the Meritex caves in underground Lenexa, data systems churn day and night, from clients around the country and around the world.

“We're about 125 feet below ground,” explains Cavern Technologies President John Clune. “There's 3 million square feet total.”

Protected by biometric security and top notch fire suppression equipment, Cavern Technologies provides mission critical infrastructure for companies and their data centers.

“Seventy-five percent of all enterprise companies are looking for space,” says Clune. “And currently, there's only about 50 percent of capacity out there on the market.”

Cavern Technologies says their location provides a big advantage when it comes to protection from natural disasters.

“You don't want to be in the line of hurricanes,” Clune said. “You don't want to be along the earthquake lines. And here in the Midwest, our biggest exposure, even more than the tornadoes is the ice storms.”
Power is the other crucial factor when a company chooses a data center. Cavern pulls power from two separate grids, and maintains two back-up generators to keep companies up 24/7. But there's the low cost as well.

“And then not only do we have the abundance of power, but for example, our powers costs run from between five to six kilowatts per hour.” Clune said. “Where out in San Diego, you're looking at 16 to 17. And so you're not looking at 10 percent, you're looking at 2 to 300 percent.”

Each suite at Cavern Technologies is completely private. That allows clients to enjoy basically an extension of their IT department, with plenty of room to work when on-site.

“We build them out to your spec,” explains Tom Zimmerman, Vice President of Network Infrastructure. “We give you a place to keep your tools, pull your tools out and work on them. You don't have to worry about other people coming in here. All dedicated to the client 100 percent.”

Cavern Technologies also adds a green initiative to their clients. Because they're located underground - their temperature stays right around 67 degrees year round. That saves them and their clients about 20 to 30 percent a year on cooling costs.
