KANSAS CITY, Mo. – They're a hometown favorite, especially when the temperatures are hot. But an Overland Park company's cool desserts are big business around the country. Just ask Jim Sheridan, the founder of
Sheridan’s Frozen Custard.
"First of all, I love frozen custard!" laughs Sheridan.
What better way to make a living than by doing something you love and making others happy. Sheridan founded Sheridan’s Frozen Custard 11 years ago this month. More than a decade later, he's still very passionate about wanting to be the best.
"We opened at 75th and Metcalf, it was our first store,” Sheridan recalls. “And our basic goal was to bring Kansas City the best dessert in town. And that's how we started -- quality driven, quality product, quality experience."
Today there are 13 stores around the metro -- and a total of 26 across nine-states. The most recent store opened in the outfield experience at the newly renovated Kaufmann Stadium.
"I believe to my knowledge we're the only frozen custard ice cream company in the country that actually makes product fresh at the stadium,” Sheridan says.
No matter which location you visit, Sheridan says they work hard to provide a great experience and exceed customers' expectations. One way they do that is with freshly made product.
"We make our product fresh all day long, throughout the day,” Sheridan explains. “So if you come to our store, there's a very good chance the product you get has been made in the last 5 to 10 minutes."
Sheridan traces the roots of his business back to his roots. Growing up in the northeast, he loved ice cream -- specifically frozen custard and its gourmet taste.
"We serve our product at about 18 degrees and because it's made warmer,” Sheridan says. “It doesn't ever numb your taste buds. And by it not numbing your taste buds, you can taste the whole dessert."
And customers get their fill of that delicious taste -- whether it is in the form of a single scoop of vanilla, a smoothie, or one of Sheridan’s signature Concretes.
"And with the Concrete, we will take and blend in anything you would like in that Concrete, and of course we do anything from wedding cake, to cookie dough, to brownies, to hot fudge."
As for Sheridan -- can he pick a favorite?
“Courtney’s Dirt and Worms and The Buckaroo,” Sheridan says. “The dirt and worms is our Concrete with sprinkles on the top and worms."
“And the second one?”
“Strawberry, hot fudge and bananas,” Sheridan says.
