OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The nation is battling one of the toughest economic times in years. Yet new businesses continue to open and even thrive.  NBC Action News is following three new businesses through these turbulent times in 2009.  This week we returned to MedExpress Labs.

The company opened on Nov. 3, 2008, across from the Costco in Overland Park.  David and Prudence Rexroat turned their 20 plus years of experience in employee benefits and health care into one-stop shopping for just about any kind of lab test you might want.

“The beauty of the process is of course you get to see your own lab result,” David Rexroat explains.  “But also you can share that with your health care professional, whoever that might be, and you don't have to wait around wondering what your result is going to be.”

There's no appointment needed.  No pre-approval or doctor's orders.  The results are returned privately to you within 24 hours.
“We're not a replacement for the doctor,” Prudence Rexroat said. “We like to work in tandem, with them. We always recommend if someone has a question or concern, that they have their health care professional evaluate or interpret those results.”

MedExpress Labs offers individual screenings for things like cholesterol or diabetes. Or patients can undergo an entire panel of health and wellness screenings.

“We have hormone panels for men and women. We have a basic healthy heart panel,” Prudence said.

Patients can also undergo more discretionary testing for things like drug use or STD's. Other patients are just looking for peace of mind.

“One woman in particular came in and she had a history of cancer in her family and her doctor would not give her a pancreatic cancer tumor marker test,” David said. “And she had a family member die of pancreatic cancer.”
The woman got the test and a negative result.

Since we first visited MedExpress Labs in January, Prudence and David say business has continued to grow. They're right on track with projections. They're looking forward to their shopping center filling up to get more foot traffic. In advance of that, they just added some window decals to explain what they do. And they're about to take their next crucial step forward.

“Should we open another location?” David said. “And we made the decision to go forward and start looking for a second location. So we're excited and pleased about that.”

They are also working on adding more corporate contracts by offering pre-employment drug screening, executive physicals on-site, and company health fairs.

We'll continue to follow MedExpress Labs throughout the year as we track their first year in business. Next week we'll return to our third business -- MLB Designs.
