Mike Marusarz anchors NBC Action News Today weekends at 8am and reports through the week. He joined NBC Action News full-time in 2005.
If a big story breaks away from the metro, Mike will likely be there. His reports have taken him across the country. Perhaps most notable to viewers is his multimedia coverage of natural disasters including historic floods and devastating tornados. Mike spent several days, and sleepless nights, in Greensburg, Kansas after a deadly tornado destroyed the town. His reports appeared in all broadcasts and on-line. His Emmy nominated and additional award winning coverage captured the shock, strength and hope of residents as they pulled together.
Mike prides himself on his versatility. When Lamar Hunt, founder of the Kansas City Chiefs, died in Dallas, Mike traveled to Texas to cover his funeral. Mike gained rare access inside the FBI’s DNA crime lab outside Washington D.C. He tracked an Amber-Alert suspect to the Ft. Worth, Texas area and reported on the man’s capture. Mike has also reported in Phoenix providing vacation relief for Scripps’ sister station KNXV. You will find his overnight bag always packed, just in case.
Mike was selected for an International Radio and Television Society Fellowship in New York City. The fully funded fellowship provided rare one-on-one meetings with top news industry professionals. It also included a paid position with FOX News Channel. Mike worked on the FOX Report and Studio B news programs with Shepard Smith. His IRTS colleagues awarded him the Steven K. Nenno Award for inspiration.
Before joining NBC Action News full-time, Mike was the Weekend Anchor/Reporter and Weekend Managing Editor at WIBW in Topeka.
He began his TV news career as an intern and overnight assignment editor at KSHB-TV.
His sister, Elizabeth graduated from Northwest Missouri State University. His parents live in the Northland. Most of his family lives in New York.
Mike wouldn’t trade his job for any other in the world. When not reporting the news he enjoys hitting the gym, (trying to) golf, reading newspapers and spending time with friends and family. He lives in downtown Kansas City, Missouri with his wife, broadcast journalist Rhiannon Ally.
